What makes a home feel cared for
Notes on the quiet work that makes a life hold together.

Harrise · Seventy · Still becoming
For the first time, I have room to ask who I am for myself.
This is my storyWhere I am now
For most of my life, I knew myself in relation to other people: daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend. Those roles are real and precious to me. At seventy, I am asking another question—not to leave that life behind, but to understand the woman who has been living it.
I am not here because I have all the answers. I am here to share what I have experienced, what I still question, and the things I continue to love. If being honest helps someone else feel less alone in an ordinary, complicated life, that is enough.
My story
I can look at the woman I was with tenderness. I made much of my life about the people I loved. That was the time I lived in, and it was truly who I was. Now I can also wonder what I might have done differently.

02The garden reminds me that rest and return belong together.
03Jodi and I share this love: the honesty and company of animals.
04The way I care for a room is one of the ways I care for a life.
05I am asking what I love, what belongs to me, and what comes next.
